HOLYOKE — Behind fences, quiet streets and even in the middle of downtown, gardens of all shapes and sizes are blooming across Holyoke. On Saturday, residents will have the chance to explore the gardens during the Holyoke Historical Society’s annual garden tour, a popular event that showcases the hard work and dedication of local gardeners. This year’s tour features ten unique gardens, ranging from small, urban oases to sprawling, meticulously maintained estates. Each stop offers a glimpse into the creativity and passion that goes into cultivating these green spaces.
The tour, now in its 15th year, has become a staple of the 蜂鸟竞技 calendar, drawing visitors from surrounding towns and cities. It’s not just about admiring pretty flowers; it’s about appreciating the history and the people behind them. Many of the gardens on the tour have been in families for generations, with stories and memories intertwined with the plants and trees.
One of the featured gardens belongs to Martha and John Sullivan, whose property on Maple Street has been transformed into a vibrant tapestry of color and texture. They’ve spent the last twenty years cultivating a diverse collection of perennials, annuals, and native plants, creating a habitat that attracts a variety of birds and pollinators. “We started small, just a few pots on the patio,” Martha shared, “but it grew from there. We love seeing the bees and butterflies, and it’s wonderful to share that with the community.”
Another highlight is the historic Elmwood estate, which boasts a formal rose garden and a charming cottage garden. The current owners have worked to restore the garden to its original 1920s grandeur, consulting historical photographs and horticultural records. “It’s a labor of love,” said head gardener, Peter Chen. “We want to honor the legacy of this place and share its beauty with everyone.”
Tickets for the garden tour are $20 and can be purchased in advance at the Holyoke Historical Society or on the day of the tour at any of the participating gardens. The tour runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, and visitors are encouraged to bring their cameras to capture the beauty they encounter. This event is a fantastic opportunity to discover the hidden gems of Holyoke and celebrate the enduring appeal of gardening.
